About Salem

Welcome to Salem, the Mango City of Tamilnadu.

Salem is Geologist paradise, surrounded by hills and landscape dotted with hillocks. The name "Salem" is derived from the word "Sailam" - meaning an area surrounded by mountains.. Salem is known for it's Gold, Silver and Steel products. Salem is called The Steel City of the South. The Salem Steel Plant was an ambitious project started with a view to utilize the locally available iron-ore from Kanchamalai to produce steel. This is the largest city in the region and has some old temples but is basically known for its industries, mainly Steel, Sago and Handweaving.
 

The district is rich in mineral deposits like Magnesite, Bauxite, Granite, Limestone, Quartz and Iron ore. Tapioca locally known as Maravalli (or) Kuchi Kilangu is extensively cultivated by the farmers of Salem.
